For decades music and fashion have gone hand in hand. It is not difficult to see why as the two are so closely linked. Music bands are marketed in a way that makes people wants to appear and be a part of a music group or phenomenon. If you think about it music is the one of the major things we have in life that make people feel like they belong. People become united by a common interest and feel part of a group and gain a strong identity and fashion is the main driving force within this.
Clothing makes a missive statement about who you are. You can tell a lot about a person by their fashion sense and over the years fashion has defined many periods in time. One of the most famous in the UK occurred in the 1970s where there was a prominent divide between Mods and Rockers: two very contrasting music styles and with it two very contrasting fashion styles. Dressing either as one or the other made a statement of what music you were into and defined you as a person.
This has continually evolved and adapted right up to this very day with trends ranging from Grunge, Nu Metal, and Emo amongst others. Fashion and music has a brilliant ability to define decades of time over the last century. If you think about the following music and fashion trends you can automatically think the decade from psychedelic music (60s) to new romantic (80s).
Today the main fashion trend is very much retro and street clothing. Retro is a clothing style which consists in wearing clothes commonly used in the past. This often includes garments and accessories that are characteristic of those times and many people use them in an exaggerated way and in combination with current clothing. Bands such as The Strokes, The Enemy, Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian have formed the very epitome of this fashion trend with their retro sounding music that on first listen almost belongs in the 70s 80s and early 90s. These bands frequently don this style of clothing on stage and have popularised and revived brands such as Adidas Originals and Lyle and Scott.
