Some shoes are timeless in flavor. Men’s shoes are a splendid example of this. Many are equally as popular today as they were years ago. Others, however, like women’s shoes, can only be enjoyed for a season before they are quickly replaced by the next new style. Shoe styles may change from year to year or even season to season, but the truth is there is nothing new under the sun.
Shoes have been around for nearly 30,000 years according to researchers at Washington University in St. Louis and the oldest specimen available for researchers to marvel at are over 9,000 years old and made of sagebrush bark strap. This bark strap certainly made a dashing sandal, and today we find gladiator like sandals back in the spotlight this spring!
The history of my favorite shoe (the stiletto) is still in its infancy compared to the sandals of old, not having been introduced until the 1950s. The addition of height has been accomplished before, of course. The 17th and 18th centuries saw their fair share of shoes that would have a detachable heel. Women in Venice would use these additions to add height, obviously, but why?
The women would use the additional height to show off the wealth of their families. Fabric was expensive and having the ability to be so tall and still be fully covered by a dress was a certain sign of the financial stability of the family.
